The Chardonnay Symposium is the sister event to the Cabs of Distinction, and is equally awesome. The 2016 event yet again did not disappoint. We were able to pick from a list of several different great seminars, thankfully some were similar to those I went to last year, so I was able to attend other ones that also interested me. The 2 seminars I chose were the Wente Clone Comparative Tasting, and the Hone Your Chardonnay Blind-Tasting Skills but I also got to attend the Pét-Nat Sparkling Wine & Oysters Gala, La Paulée Dinner and Vintners Awards Ceremony (thanks to my date Glenn from Adelaida), and of course the Saturday Grand Tasting. Chardonnay is the number 1 selling wine in the world and in California alone there are 100,000 acres planted. It’s a very versatile wine with flavors and textures that can go from very tropical, to creamy and buttery, to minerally and it is even the primary white varietal used to make Champagne. Of all the varieties Chardonnay has been most popular with women and with so many different incarnations it’s easy to see why. Tiny Bubbles…By the Sea

We attended the first annual BubblyFest by the sea, and although there are similar events in Europe and even South Africa, this is the only Sparkling Wine and Champagne Festival in the United States. Being that October is probably one of the most temperate times of year here on the Central Coast, the weather averages 75 degrees during the day and can drop to around 50 at night, this month is ideal for having a festival like this. The outdoor, weekend long event opened with a Great Gatsby themed cocktail party, and closing brunch taking place at Dolphin Bay Resort and the Grand Tasting along with a Press Preview, held at the SeaCrest Resort. As I mentioned the final event, was a Sunday brunch; unfortunately we were unable to attend that event so I can’t comment and will only be discussing the events we actually attended. Read more…

After a crazy schedule filled with wonderful epicurean adventures, I’m finally getting around to writing about Day 2 of Rolling out the Barrels. Because even though we hit 8 wineries, we didn’t feel the need to race around from one place to the other so we could give a report on ALL the pairings (in case some place ran out) and offerings like the first day, the 2nd day was much more chill for us. There were fewer places offering food pairings and in general there was more of just a come on in and drink vibe, all around. Read more…

Rollin’ Rollin’ Rollin’…SLO Wiiiine! (Day 1)

Roll out the Barrels is a 4 day food, wine, and music, kick off to summer event in San Luis Obispo, and this year was the 23rd Anniversary. Doug and I have been wanting to go for years but the event always sells out. They start the event with Barrels in the Plaza which is a “Grown here, Made here” winery and restaurant pairing event that takes place in Mission Plaza. The second night are Winemaker Dinners, and Saturday and Sunday is the Passport to Wine Country- an open house event. This is the event we attended. Two full days of winery to winery wine tasting,  food pairings, and music. Our goal was to hit 7 wineries a day for a 14 winery total. Needless to say there were a LOT of wines tasted. So I figure I’ll talk about some of our favorites and link to those with winery descriptions for some of the others. Read more…

An Afternoon of Epicurean Delights

The Community Action Partnerships of San Luis Obispo or CAPSLO Health and prevention division provides health and medical services for underprivileged and low income, men, women, children and families in our community. Every year for the last 26 years they have put on an annual charity food and wine event called Afternoon of Epicurean Delights. It took place this year at the stunningly iconic and historic Chapman House – a Tudor style mansion in Shell Beach overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean. Read more…

99 taps of beer on the wall

1 week, many beers!

As a blogger and very fortunate member of the ShareSLO2013 “street team” I was lucky enough to garner an invite to attend San Luis Obispo’s American Craft Beer Week.  Normally it is a week-long national celebration of craft beer, the definition of which is small, independently-owned commercial breweries, some you may have heard of like Sierra Nevada or Lagunitas, others you may have not like Lost Abbey and The Bruery. The San Luis Obispo event however kicked off on May 11th for 9 glorious beer-filled days and I was going to do my very best to go to as many events as possible! After all how could I report back if I didn’t dive head first into the brew? For you my friends I have made this sacrifice. I will say there was a lot of beer and a lot of tasting/drinking so to discuss every beer I ingested would put the encyclopedia Brittanica to shame. Though it’s still going to be a long post (the event was a week long after all), I’m focusing mainly on the beers I really liked. So grab a brewski and sit down for a good long read! Read more…

Calling all Beer Lovers!

Starting this weekend is San Luis Obispo’s own celebration of American Craft Beer Week. Come sample some of the rarest and best beers in the world here in our own back yard and compare tasting notes (yes we do that with beer too) with your #ShareSLO Street Team compatriots. You’re sure to see lots of our winemaker friends there as well – after all, as they say:

“It takes a lot of beer to make a bottle of wine.”

Farmers, Winemakers and Chocolatiers, Oh MY!!!

Every year the city of Pismo Beach has the Taste of Pismo, a food and wine event sponsored by the San Luis Obispo Wine Country Association. The kick off party this year was Farmfest, a meet and greet with our local Farmers, Winemakers, Chocolatiers, Chefs and more all overlooking the ocean at Dinosaur Caves Park. Getting a ticket included wine tasting and food samples prepared by the various producers and talented Chefs. Read more…

One of the first places my wife and I discovered when we were seeking fine dining with a Central Coast flair was the SeaVenture Restaurant on the third floor of a hotel sitting on the sand of Pismo Beach. There are a few places like this up and down the coast, but the SeaVenture has a special charm of its own that sets it apart. It’s not trying to be a modern day metal and glass monstrosity. It’s intimate and decidedly loungy feeling with what look like hand-carved blocks of marble in the entryway exhibiting an old craftsmanship we don’t see in many newer restaurants. Some of our best times have been long leisurely meals watching stunning sunsets or migrating whales, but this is also a destination when we just want to class it up for an evening and grab some light bites and drinks.
