The Chardonnay Symposium is the sister event to the Cabs of Distinction, and is equally awesome. The 2016 event yet again did not disappoint. We were able to pick from a list of several different great seminars, thankfully some were similar to those I went to last year, so I was able to attend other ones that also interested me. The 2 seminars I chose were the Wente Clone Comparative Tasting, and the Hone Your Chardonnay Blind-Tasting Skills but I also got to attend the Pét-Nat Sparkling Wine & Oysters Gala, La Paulée Dinner and Vintners Awards Ceremony (thanks to my date Glenn from Adelaida), and of course the Saturday Grand Tasting. Roll out the barrels

Every Spring the SLO Vintners Association has a weekend long event, Roll Out the Barrels that focuses on the San Luis Obispo and Edna Valley wine regions; with a kick off music, food and wine event in the Mission Plaza naturally called Barrels in the Plaza. The wineries literally “roll out” their latest offerings and various local restaurants provide the food and well-known local bands provide the music for this Grand Tasting event. In previous years, though I have gone to the winery open houses and events, this year was the first time I got to attend in the Plaza. It was a great time. Read more…

Old meets new at the Brew

A few  months ago I wrote a blog about the moving and complete revamp of the SLO Brew, a staple hot spot of San Luis Obispo‘s nightlife. Well stage 1 is now complete and it’s fantastic! The entire vibe and atmosphere of the restaurant is updated. Instead of mediocre bar burgers, nachos and hot dogs the food is now way more gastropub with the burgers being upgraded using grass-fed sustainable beef, and those nachos are now dueling-pork and duck with home-style tortilla chips. It’s a much fresher, more mature and delicious dining experience but still paired with the hip, chill musical vibe the Brew has been known for. They’ve even updated their bar with handcrafted cocktails and a barrel aged spirits and beer program; with a brewery on premises. Read more…

The Cabs are Back in Town

It’s that time of year again and one of my favorite educational red wine events is back. Every year I think the Paso Robles Cab Collective (PRCC) Cabs of Distinction, can’t get better and every year I’m wrong! This year actually blew my mind. This year though it was a smaller, more intimate event and held at the new and stunningly beautiful Allegretto Vineyard Resort in Paso Robles. Aside from the En Primeur & Current Vintage Tasting there were 3 separate seminars. The first “The other Cabernet” a discussion on Cab Franc was hosted by CIA instructor and Master Sommelier Bob Bath, the second “Know Your Cab Clones” about the clonal varieties and the third and final which was the real mind blower was the “Judgement of Paso” a play on the 1976 Judgement of Paris wine tasting. New Year…New Brew!

Happy New Year everyone!!! I hope yours started well.  Mine started with a lovely luncheon in the old SLO Brew building to introduce us to the new plans and a tour of the new SLO Brew space in the historic Carissa Building. The SLO Brew has been a staple on the Central Coast since 1988, and was one of the very first micro breweries in the U.S., it’s been a restaurant, brewery and concert venue ever since. At its peak it produced 30,000 barrels of various beers and was distributed to 39 states. As with all things in life the Brew has to grow and evolve, so now it has new owners and is in the middle of a re-brand and expansion. Read more…

Chardonnay is the number 1 selling wine in the world and in California alone there are 100,000 acres planted. It’s a very versatile wine with flavors and textures that can go from very tropical, to creamy and buttery, to minerally and it is even the primary white varietal used to make Champagne. Of all the varieties Chardonnay has been most popular with women and with so many different incarnations it’s easy to see why. This year I got to attend the Chardonnay Symposium for the first time and it was quite an event, with wine makers and Chardonnays from all over the world. Read more…

The last couple of weeks have been a bit of a whirlwind. We went from San Luis Obispo to Los Angeles down to San Diego and back to LA, then it was up to the Central Coast, Davis and Berkeley. The first leg of our trip headed down to San Diego and included a stop at a great little Greek restaurant, Taverna Blu, owned by George Katakalidis a great guy who is an ex professional soccer player turned restaurateur. Distinctively Cab!

This blog posting is long over due. In fact it’s since April 2014 over due, because that’s when this event occurred.  I have already written a couple blogs on the Cab Collective but the Cabs of Distinction event is my current favorite. It was a collaboration between the acclaimed SOMM Journal, Parker Sanpei, and the Paso Robles CAB (Cabernet and Bordeaux) Collective (PRCC) it was 4 days (I was only able to attend 3 of the days) long and included a “camp” for Sommeliers and Press with the entire event culminating in a Gala tasting for the public. The first 2 days took place at the ballroom of the Paso Robles Inn, and 28 wineries were present. Read more…

The President’s day holiday allowed us to attend the Paso Cab Collective luncheon led by Linda Parker Sanpei and Michael Mooney winemaker extraordinaire, and owner of Chateau Margene.  I was very honored to be one of a very, small, handful of press to be invited to this amazing event. Doug and I were joined at the table by Linda, and Michael along with Jonathan Cristaldi from Tasting Panel magazine, Tom Wilmer (author, NPR podcaster and travel writer), Katie Budge from the Tribune, and WendyThies Sell.  Read more…

A ‘Stache, a Bash and a Smash!

It’s a ‘Stache Bash!!!

I’m a a big proponent of charitable organizations and the good works they do. Many of the events I’ve been lucky enough to attend and write about are fundraisers for charities; you may remember Must Charities from Forks and Corks, Zoo to you from the Mac and Cheese fest, and CAPSLO from An Afternoon of Epicurean Delights. Recently one of my favorite restaurant/bars in San Luis Obispo Sidecar, put on a great fundraiser for Movember, a global charity that focuses on men’s health; specifically raising funds and awareness to combat prostate and testicular cancer as well as mental health challenges. Participation is encouraged by men, growing mustaches or a Mo (“Mo” is slang for mustache) for all 30-days of November. The movement began in Melbourne Australia in 2003 when 30 Mo Bros first grew mustaches. It has since grown globally inspiring more than 4 million “Mo Bros” and “Mo Sistas” to participate across 21 countries worldwide. Read more…
